About the workshop

Learn how to make an appropriate and accurate barring referral, including how to meet your legal duties.

A referral can be made when there are concerns that an individual may have harmed a child or vulnerable adult, or put a child or vulnerable adult at risk of harm. 

This workshop will cover:

  • Who has the legal duty to make a referral
  • When a DBS Barring referral should be made
  • When the legal duty is met when making a referral
  • The three different referral routes  
  • What Regulated Activity is  
  • How to make a good quality referral
  • The consequences of not making appropriate barring referrals
  • The consequences of being included in one or both Barred Lists
  • The benefits of DBS and your organisation working together   

The workshop will run for approximately 1hr30, including a 30-minute Q&A at the end.

The sessions will be delivered by Laura Gaskell, National Outreach Advisor, and Sean Maskey, Regional Outreach Advisor, from the DBS Outreach Team.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is responsible for managing the lists of people who are barred from regulated activity in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Outreach Team work across the nation to inform organisations of how DBS checks work, while helping organisations understand their DBS responsibilities.
