The Hewitt review: where are we one year on?

The NHS Confederation has published a Long Read which explores progress against key themes in Patricia Hewitt's review of integrated care systems. The review recommended the government should produce a workforce strategy for social care, like the NHS workforce plan, as soon as possible (recommendation 27). Since then, Skills for Care has published a 15-year strategy for the adult social care workforce, which the NHS confederation believes the new government should support.


Dementia diagnoses in England reach record high

Figures issued by NHS England show that 487,432 people in England were diagnosed with dementia in June 2024. NHS England says a timely diagnosis is vital so more people get the support they need to live with the illness. The NHS is encouraging people to get checked if they have any symptoms of dementia.
 

Guidance on pressure ulcers: how to safeguard adults

The Department of Health and Social Care’s guidance on responding to individuals at risk of developing pressure ulcers has been amended to update links to the updated National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) pressure ulcer recommendations and clinical pathway documents.
 

Heat mortality monitoring report: 2023

UK Health Security Agency figures show that during summer 2023, there were an estimated 2,295 deaths associated with the five periods of heat across the summer. The summer of 2023, which was the first in which the new Heat Health Alert system operated, was the eighth warmest on record. 
 

NHS England issues updated response to global IT outage

NHS England has issued an update to the global IT outage saying systems are now back online and patients should attend appointments as normal unless told otherwise. People can contact their GP in the usual way, or use their local pharmacy, NHS 111 online or call 111 for urgent health advice.
