Critical Failures in Homecare Regulation Revealed by New Report

A damning report released today by the Homecare Association exposes significant shortcomings in the Care Quality Commission's (CQC) regulation of homecare services in England. The findings suggest that these failures are putting vulnerable individuals at risk and causing substantial harm to care providers.

The report highlights several systemic problems undermining the CQC's effectiveness:

  1. Severe resource constraints
  2. A dysfunctional funding model
  3. Ineffective IT systems
  4. Misalignment with local authorities
  5. Poor leadership and management of change

These issues have led to concerning results:

  • 60% of homecare providers are either unrated (23%) or have severely outdated ratings (37%)
  • Insufficient inspections are jeopardizing service quality and safety
  • Providers face crippling registration delays and inconsistent inspections

Our CEO, Dr Jane Townson OBE commented:

“We're not just highlighting problems; we're offering solutions for improvement. It's time to rebuild our regulatory system. The CQC needs a lifeboat of resources, modernised systems, and a realistic understanding of regulatory costs.”
