Adult Social Care contributes £46 billion to UK economy
A new report commissioned by Skills for Care and Development (note 1) highlights the major contribution that adult social care services make to the nation’s economy, including the sector’s value as a major employer of a workforce which delivers care in people’s own homes, or in residential care facilities.
UKHCA’s Policy Director, Colin Angel, said:
“In addition to the £46 billion identified in today’s report, the full impact of adult social care’s contribution still needs to be calculated. Further work should include the benefits that social care brings to the economic efficiency of the NHS and the support it provides to informal and family carers who are able to remain in paid employment.
“Too often adult social care has been seen purely in terms of an unavoidable cost. However, social care services not only bring a benefit to the wellbeing and independence for older and disabled people, it has a multiplier-effect in the economy, which needs to be recognised in future decisions by the governments of the four UK nations.”
